Hokkaido in 5 days: Sapporo by area and a full day in Otaru

All four nights are in one hotel near Odori, so the bags are left there on arrival from New Chitose Airport and picked up on the last evening before the train back. Day 1 starts with breakfast at Nijo Market and goes out to Moerenuma Park and Hokkaido University. Day 2 keeps to the west side, from Maruyama Park and Okurayama to Hokkaido Jingu, then rides up Mount Moiwa as the light goes. Day 3 is Otaru: the market, the canal, the old bank and the shops of Sakaimachi street, back in Sapporo in time for the view from JR Tower. Day 4 pairs the Historical Village with the Hokkaido Museum next door and ends at the Beer Museum and Sapporo Factory next to it, and day 5 still fits Shiroi Koibito Park and Hitsujigaoka in before the airport.

                            Good to know

                            • In early December the sun sets in Sapporo at about 16:00, which is why the parks come in the mornings and Mount Moiwa is timed for dusk and the city lights. Make sure the ropeway is running on your date before building that afternoon around it.
                            • The Sapporo Beer Museum, the Hokkaido Museum and the Hokkaido University Museum close on Mondays. This plan runs from Wednesday to Sunday; if your dates include a Monday, keep those three off it.
                            • Otaru is a day trip on the JR line from Sapporo, under an hour each way in this plan. Its sights sit close together, so most of day 3 is on foot between the market, the canal and Sakaimachi street.
                            • Day 1 begins at the airport at 06:00. With a later flight, Moerenuma Park is the easiest stop to drop or move. On day 5 the bags are collected near Odori, then it is about an hour on the train to New Chitose Airport.
