Tokyo, Mount Fuji and Hakone in 5 days: a day-by-day itinerary
5 days · 18 places · Nights near Kowakidani station 小涌谷駅, Oshino Hakkai, Ueno 上野
This route runs backwards from the usual one: it leaves Haneda for Hakone on the first morning, works its way to the Fuji Five Lakes, and saves Tokyo for the end, so the last morning is spent in the city, under an hour from Haneda. Hakone gets a night near Kowakidani, the Fuji side a night by Oshino Hakkai, and Tokyo two nights near Ueno. Day 3 is the long one: Oshino Hakkai at seven, Lake Kawaguchi and the Chūreitō pagoda at Arakurayama Sengen Park, then the evening ride back to Tokyo.
Calculated by Michiplan for a trip starting Wed, Dec 2, 2026, with days from 06:00. Every ride here is estimated from how often its line runs: no open timetable covers these lines. Check the times before you go.

Good to know
- Your bags move with you here, so pack light. They wait at the Kowakidani hotel on day 1, ride with you through Gotemba on day 2, sit in luggage storage by Kawaguchiko Station while you sightsee on day 3, and stay at the Ueno hotel for the last two nights.
- Mount Fuji is often hidden by cloud, and mornings tend to be clearer, which is why the plan reaches Oshino Hakkai by seven. On a grey day the lakes and the pagoda are still worth the visit, and the cloud may lift by the afternoon.
- The Ōwakudani ropeway and parts of the valley can close at short notice when volcanic gas levels rise; check on the morning of day 1 and see Lake Ashi and Hakone Shrine first if it is shut.
- Day 2 is light on purpose: after the Open-Air Museum and the outlets, one bus of about an hour and three quarters takes you to Oshino, where you arrive around four with the rest of the day free by the springs.
