This route makes one loop out of Fukuoka instead of day trips: a full first day in the city, the evening train to Beppu, two nights by the sea there, and Dazaifu as a stop on the way back rather than a day of its own. Day 2 is the long one, with the Hells of Beppu at opening time, Lake Kinrin in Yufuin at midday and the beach sand bath after dark. The last two nights are near Nakasu-Kawabata, which leaves the final morning for one museum before the airport.

                          Good to know

                          • Your luggage never comes sightseeing. On day 1 it waits in coin lockers while you see Fukuoka and rides with you on the evening train to Beppu; on day 3 it goes into lockers at Dazaifu while you walk the temple, the museum and the shrine, and you collect it before the train into the city.
                          • The plan puts the Hells of Beppu first on day 2, at 08:00, because they close at 17:00; the onsen and the beach sand bath, where you lie under warm sand, are kept for the late afternoon and evening, and the sand bath is a short walk from the hotel area.
                          • Kyushu National Museum and Dazaifu Tenmangū are joined by a passage with escalators and a moving walkway, so the plan walks from one to the other in a few minutes; Kōmyōzen-ji, known for its raked stone gardens, is a short walk from the shrine.
                          • Day 3 leaves Beppu at 06:10 so that Dazaifu is done by mid-afternoon and you reach the hotel before five. A later train still works; what you give up is time in the museum, which the plan gives two hours.
